With the large-scale destruction across the entire earthquake affected areas of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan and Pakistani administered Kashmir, there is a genuine need and justification for reconstruction and rehabilitation projects of all types. While the list for reconstruction projects runs long, the major urgency is for the rebuilding of basic infrastructure and the resettlement of survivors in permanent shelters in their native villages. Specifically, priority sectors that need immediate attention are roads and communications, health, education, housing, water and sanitation projects, and administrative infrastructure. Numerous international and Pakistani agencies and organizations are working in different parts of the affected regions, on one or more of these priorities.
Without prejudice against the importance of the other priority areas listed above, each of which is equally critical in its own right, KMT has opted to focus on establishing this school because its Trustees consider education to be the most reliable vehicle for the sustainable development of any community. KMT believes that a good school education will allow the children of Kaghan to compete for places in the best universities of the country, eventually leading to employment prospects that their previous generation could never even conceive of having. Each child given an opportunity for such an education can therefore in principal become an agent for change for an entire family in the future. This prospect alone is justification enough for the Kaghan Memorial School Project.
